Types of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can be divided into three main categories—epithelioid, sarcomatoid and mixed/biphasic. Epithelioid mesothelioma affects the covering surrounding the body’s internal organs. The most common form of mesothelioma, epithelioid mesothelioma makes up 50% to 70% of all mesothelioma cases. This type of the asbestos-related cancer has the best survival rate.

Making up 7% to 20% of mesothelioma cases, sarcomatoid mesothelioma affects the bone, cartilage, muscles and fat. Lastly, mixed/biphasic mesothelioma is a combination of epithelioid and sarcomatoid mesothelioma and occurs in 25% to 30% of mesothelioma patients.

In addition to cell types, mesothelioma cases can also be distinguished by the body part it affects. Mesothelioma can affect the following areas of the body:

  • Pleural Cavity - Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Abdomen - Peritoneal Mesothelioma
  • Lining and Sac Surrounding the Heart - Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, while pericardial is the rarest.
