Swelling

Swelling, following injury, is part of the body’s natural healing process. However, in the case of swelling of the brain (also called cerebral edema), it can be deadly. Because the brain exists within the confined space of the skull, swelling of the brain results in intracranial pressure (ICP). The pressure can cause further damage to the brain, by forcing it against the abrasive interior of the skull. ICP can be extremely dangerous, causing physical and mental impairment and even death.

Treatment for cerebral edema includes relieving pressure, removing water and treating the root cause of the problem. Corticosteroids can relieve swelling, while diuretics help the body remove excess water. In some cases, surgery is needed to relieve pressure on the brain.

Symptoms of cerebral edema include:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Altered state of consciousness
  • Numbness
  • Lack of coordination
  • Nausea

Anyone experiencing the above symptoms of brain swelling should seek medical attention immediately.

After receiving proper medical treatment, victims of cerebral edema should also consider their legal options. If you or a loved one suffered from cerebral edema, fill out our free case review form on the right. A brain injury attorney will review your claim and legal rights to determine whether you are eligible for a lawsuit.
