Susceptibility

In most healthy individuals, foodborne illness (food poisoning) is merely a source of brief discomfort and no specific treatment is necessary for recovery. However, for certain high risk individuals, not only are they more likely to contract an infection, but they are also more likely to develop serious, possibly fatal, complications. These high risk individuals should take added precaution when dealing with food and drink, because of their increased susceptibility. Elderly persons and infants (particularly when bottle-fed) are at a higher risk, as are pregnant women. People with compromised immune systems are also more susceptible to infection, such as those with HIV (human immunodefiency virus) or AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
