Sep. 30 (UNION-TRIBUNE): The week before her bike ride through Death Valley last year, Jenny Vandevelde got food poisoning. A few days later, she suffered a concussion when she slipped during a racquetball game and slammed her head into the pavement. The 110-degree heat during the ride made her headache even worse.
