Repetitive Trauma Injuries

Repetitive Trauma Injuries

Repetitive motion injuries are the result of stress or strain placed on a body part from a task’s repetitive nature. Typing, using a computer mouse, twisting and grasping are all repetitive motions than can result in an injury. Hands, wrists, fingers, elbows, shoulders and backs are the most commonly affected areas.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common injuries caused by repetitive motions. Workers afflicted with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or other repetitive motion injuries can seek workers’ compensation. Carpal Tunnel occurs when an individual’s wrist is exposed to repetitive strain on a regular basis. Tissues around the wrist tendons can swell to a point where they compress the median nerve. Workers who develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are entitled to 100% of all medical expenses that are necessary and reasonable to treat the condition. Medical expenses can include doctor visits, emergency room services, hospital care, first aid and prescriptions. You may also be entitled to temporary total disability compensation while you are away from work and under active medical treatment.

Other common types of repetitive trauma injuries include:

  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Back injury caused by repetitive strain or lifting
  • Arthritis and repetitive strain injuries
  • Herniated disc
  • De Quervain’s (painful inflammation of tendons in the thumb)

If you are suffering from any of the above, you may be suffering from a repetitive motion injury induced by your job. Those suffering from a repetitive motion injury should take the following steps:

  1. If you’re in pain, see a doctor. Most of the time repetitive trauma injuries can be treated with prompt medical care.
  2. When you visit your physician, make sure you give a detailed description of your job duties. To win compensation for your repetitive trauma injury, your doctor must believe that your job led to the injury.
  3. Tell your employer about your injuries. Your case may get dismissed if you do not inform your employer promptly.
  4. If you have restrictions at work, be sure to follow them.
