Birth Injury vs Birth Defect

Birth Injury vs Birth Defect

A birth injury is a condition or injury, such as cerebral palsy or a broken bone, that occurred during the delivery of the child, and was caused by a complication or mistake in the delivery process. Birth defects, on the other hand, are abnormalities present at birth, such as Down syndrome or spina bifida; they are caused by occurrences during or prior to the pregnancy. They can arise from genetic mutations, conditions in uterus, actions of the mother (smoking or abusing alcohol) or for unknown reasons.
