A birth injury is a condition or injury, such as cerebral palsy or a broken bone, that occurred during the delivery of the child, and was caused by a complication or mistake in the delivery process. Birth defects, on the other hand, are abnormalities present at birth, such as Down syndrome or spina bifida; they are caused by occurrences during or prior to the pregnancy.
