Because they deal with newborn infants, Birth Injuries are particularly tragic. Complications during the pregnancy or delivery, combined with errors on the part of the doctor or medical staff, can result in permanent and irreversible damage to the baby. Some of the more serious birth injuries include paralysis, brain damage, bone fractures, Cerebral Palsy, Erb’s Palsy, other diseases, and even death.  In cases such as these, monetary compensation is given to the family involved to help pay the ensuing medical bills.  However, not all Birth Injuries are the fault of the medical staff; sometimes even the most competent and reasonable actions cannot prevent injury. There are also less serious instances of Birth Injury, including skin abrasions, minor bruising, or swelling of the scalp.  Combined, major and minor Birth Injuries account for nearly 6 in every 1000 births in the United States.
